This is an exciting time for your family in so many ways!  Baby Dedication connects you as a new parent with the magnificent responsibility and opportunity of leading your children spiritually.  When you dedicate your child to God, you are acknowledging two simple facts:  Your baby is God's creation and therefore belongs to God.  Second, as stewards of your child, you have the responsibility to intentionally raise your child in a way that's pleasing to God.  May God bless you as you walk this important path together with your church and for your child.

What is Baby Dedication?

We believe God has called you to be the primary faith influencer in your child's life.  Take a few moments to read Deuteronomy chapter 6.  When you participate in Baby Dedication, you are pledging to teach your child about Jesus and take the lead role as parents in developing their faith.

The tradition of Baby Dedication began with Hannah in the Old Testament in 1 Samuel, chapters 1 and 2.  Hannah was desperately troubled because she did not have any children.  She prayed to God in the presence of Eli, a priest, asking for a child.  She promised God that, if He gave her son, she would give her son back to God.  God answered her prayer and, remembering her promise, she brought Samuel to the temple and dedicated him to the Lord.

It's a Celebration!

The congregation of Second Baptist wants to be a part of your family too!  During the Baby Dedication ceremony, the congregation will make a pledge to support you, to be there when you need us, and to love you and your family.  Your child's future Sunday School teachers will be there.  Your child's future VBS leaders will be there.  The adults who may one day attend summer camps will be there.  Our church family will play both big and small parts in your child's future.  We pray one day, your child will make a forever decision to follow Christ.

So celebrate this day!  At home:

  • Invite your family members to attend.
  • Take lots of pictures (or delegate someone since your hands may be full!)
  • Write a heartfelt note they will read one day.
  • Pray blessings over your child.
  • Take a family photo.
  • Make simple cupcakes to commemorate the day.
  • Or go all out and write a song or a poem in their honor!

Make the day special and make memories you will treasure.

What Baby Dedication is NOT

Baby Dedication is not to be confused with infant baptism.  We believe the Bible teaches that Baptism comes after someone has made a faith commitment.

Baby Dedication is not prescribed by God anywhere in scripture.  Baptism and Lord's Supper are the only two ordinances God gave the church.  Baby Dedication is not required and doesn't "save" a child.

Even though God doesn't require parents to dedicate their children, we do encourage believing parents to use this milestone for several reasons.

  • It helps families "start off on the right foot".  Your family is at a pivotal stage of life.  It helps to make the commitment to raise your child in a Christian home to the best you know how.
  • It helps our church as an annual reminder that our congregation has a responsibility to show up for families, to be involved, and to pray for families.
  • It's a reminder to us all of the significance of our jobs as parents.
  • It introduces your family to our church.
  • Your family is precious to God and to our church and we want to celebrate with you.
